I am excited to announce that Michael Brawn Consulting is now a Social Enterprise focussed on developing a resilient and thriving business ecosystem from the northern suburbs of Adelaide to the hills and plains as well as Gawler and the Barossa region.
What is a Social Enterprise?
A social enterprise is a commercial enterprise that applies business methods to achieve social, environmental, or community outcomes while still being financially sustainable. It does not rely on grants or donations the way a charity or non-profit might but instead embeds its social purpose directly into its business model.
For a small business advisory firm like Michael Brawn Consulting, this means combining revenue‑generating advisory work with pro bono work for intentional social impact, built into service design, delivery, and business behaviour.
1. We Embed our Social Purpose into our Business Model
Applying the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) principles of stakeholder value, sustainability, and community benefit we define our social mission:
As a social enterprise, Michael Brawn Consulting is dedicated to empowering small businesses through expert consulting solutions. Our focus is on building resilience through strategic planning, governance, compliance, and digital transformation. We help our clients to navigate today's complex business landscape and achieve their goals such as maintaining consistent growth, achieving sustainability or building digital capability.
We work with clients or projects that align with that purpose.
We prioritise outcomes that benefit community wellbeing and long‑term sustainability, not just profit.
2. Deliver Advisory Services that Create Social Impact
Our materials emphasise socially responsible goods, services and community value.
We help local small businesses adopt sustainable practices, circular economy models, or community‑benefit strategies.
Provide governance, risk and compliance guidance that enhances trust, transparency, and ethical conduct.
Deliver free health checks, education programs or workshops aimed at growing small businesses or developing turn around strategies where needed.
3. Apply socially responsible practices internally
Drawing on CSR guidelines such as ISO definitions and sustainability principles, we:
Apply ethical governance and transparent reporting.
Minimise environmental footprint in operations.
Ensure fair employment practices (even as a small team / sole trader).
Operate in alignment with community values and expectations.
4. Prioritise Stakeholder Engagement and Community Value
Our business model emphasises stakeholder models including:
Working closely with local councils, chambers of commerce, industry associations or non‑profits (Gawler Council, Regional Development Association, Stretton Centre, Polaris Centre, Adelaide Business Hub etc).
Partnering on initiatives that support local economic development or resilience.
5. Reinvest Profits into Social Outcomes
Rather than maximising profits for our owners we typically:
Reinvest surplus into expanding socially focused service offerings.
Subsidise advisory services (we offer 8+ free health checks) for local SMEs and early‑stage business owners.
Fund our research and innovation benefiting the wider SME ecosystem.
6. Maintain Strong Governance and Ethical Foundations
Standards of governance and compliance highlight the importance of:
Transparent oversight and decision‑making.
Responsible risk management.
Ethical conduct that protects clients and the broader community.
This is especially important for an advisory company like Michael Brawn Consulting, as our clients rely heavily on trusted guidance.
Putting It All Together
In practice, we function as a social business by designing our services, operations, partnerships, and profit model around creating positive community impact, not as an add‑on but as our core reason for operating.
